During football seanon, we have a high school football player come in every Friday to spend some time with us in the classroom! We call it "Football Friday" Check out some of the fun activities we have done!
What a wonderful (and busy!) couple weeks it has been! We have been very busy with our "Start Smart" review skills and learning our Daily 5 centers.
We have done a great job learning how to find our secret spots and how to get started right away. We are building our stamina and working towards our goal of 20 minute center times! So far, we have made it to 9 minutes!
Take a look at some of our secrets spots at "Read to Self"
This week, we will focus on our "Read to Someone" and "Work on Writing" centers. Stay tuned for more updates and see if we have met our goal!
Welcome back to a new school year and welcome to 1st grade! I am so excited to be starting what I know will be a great year.
We had such an exciting first day! After the big task of unpacking and putting our loads of supplies away, we were able to have some fun with our "magic dough"!
Looks like we will have a great year!!
After we made our magic dough turn colors, we learned a little bit about classroom expectations, had some fun at PE and Music and ended our day by reading "First Day Jitters" and drinking some 'jitter juice' so that we are excited to come back tomorrow!
I apologize for being SO delayed in posting all the fun things we have been up to! With a mix of technical difficulties and the way time has been FLYING by, updating the blog got put on the back burner.
But we are back! I am so excited to share some of the fun and exciting things that we did during the first semester of 1st grade. From our fun run, number talks and other projects and activities, to holiday parties and more! I hope you enjoy the pictures and I promise 2018 will be filled with more frequent updates!

Meet Elfie, Our Classroom Elf!
Once again, I apologize for such a delayed blog update! If you (or your child) were patient enough to look through this entire blog post, have your child tell me the secret words: NEW YEAR next week (up until 1-12-18) to get a choice of extra tickets or piece of candy!
The last couple weeks, we have been working very hard on our "Small Moment" stories during our writing workshop!
We love to share with our elbow partners! We take turns reading and listening, and we help our partners add more details to their amazing stories.
Sharing in our "author's chair" is one of our favorite parts of writing workshop!
We have started September already, and boy these first graders have been working so hard! They have learned all of their math centers and how to do them, have taken their fall MAP testing, and are working hard at practicing Daily 5 centers.
Here we are learning our "Read to Someone" center at Daily 5. Students get to pick their own partners, pick their own special spots, and get to read their favorite books to their friends! They are doing such a great job.
We worked so hard this week, that we had to take lots of "brain breaks". We love to get up and move our bodies and give our brains a break.
The first week of first grade is always filled with lots of "firsts"! We began our first day reading "First Day Jitters" and talked about all the things the students (and I!) might have been nervous about on our first day. We then drank some "jitter juice" to chase away any leftover jitters we might have. Then we were ready to begin learning how first grade works!
We have already learned 3 of our Daily 5 centers and how to use our fun "secret spot" items such as our scoop chairs and lap desks. We are doing such a fantastic job and have built our stamina up to 12 minutes already!! Next week we will learn another new center and will try to make our goal of working hard for 15 whole minutes. I'm so impressed! Stay tuned for more pictures and updates about this fabulous first grade class!
In our classroom, we use lots of alternative seating! We have just started using these awesome Stabili-T-Stools this week! These are stools that allow students to move, wiggle, rock, and sway while also doing any activity at a desk or table without disruption. Studies have shown that when your body is engaged, your brain is also engaged.
We have been busy busy in first grade starting off our new school year! I can't believe how much we have learned already. We have been working hard in "Start Smart"-our review of Kindergarten skills--while we learn all of our reading and math centers. We have also been learning how we can use all of our flexible seating options in the room this year. The kiddos are very excited about all the different and fun ways they can learn around the room. Stay tuned as we introduce more places to sit and things to use this week!

We made it through this incredibly hot week and are off to a great start! The first graders have already been learning lots in the first 14 days of school. We have been working hard on our writing, and this week we wrote some facts about pigs to go along with our fantasy story, A Pig in a Wig. Check out what we did...
Welcome to Mrs. McElhoe's classroom blog! We will try our best to update you on the fun and exciting things we are doing in 1st grade as often as we can. We will include descriptions of our activities, pictures, and examples of our students' work.
